Sustainable STEM: Civil Connections Club
Week 6 theme: energy
This week, explore the theme of solar energy by creating your own example solar updraft tower, which will channel hot air upwards to power a pinwheel or hydropower by creating your own water wheel.
week 5 theme: waste management
This week we dive into waste management by looking at compost. Waste management is an essential system which is integral to keeping our environment clean and properly managed. By filling the container with organic materials, water, and oxygen, the already present bacteria will break down the plant material into useful compost which you can use for your garden (or your mung bean plant!). Composting needs oxygen, heat and water to be successful. These three elements help the microorganisms to multiply, survive and speed up the decomposition rate in the composting jar.
Week 4 Theme: Sewage Treatment
This weeks topic is sewage treatment. Learn how water gets distributed to appliances in your home through your piping and what happens to it after it is used.
week 3 theme: water
This week in the club it is time to explore water. Join us as we design, create, test on repeat with our own water filters using household items
week 2 theme: shelter
The topic for the club is all about shelter and how to make housing more sustainable. Youth will learn about the knowledge that goes into constructing sustainable housing and get to make their very own shelter design using TinkerCad. Youth will choose one of their designs to be 3D printed, which will be available for pick up later in the term.
Week 1 Theme: Food
This week we explore our first theme of Food. Learn about sustainability, where food comes from with a focus on plants based foods, and develop your own hydroponic system to grow mung beens.
